Holidays 2008 & Happy New Year 2009!

Happy New Year

In the blink of an eye…2009. And happy for it. We are in dire need of a fresh start and the New Year is always good for this. As per normal, I was a bit weepy and reflective over the day leading up to New Year’s Eve…but it seemed appropriate with 2008 being such a challenge mentally, physically and emotionally. The holidays were a happy transitional time to now. Between the giant snow storm, a couple personal days and the forced College closure for the holidays, I had just about 17 days off. This being my first day back…back to routine and regularity…definitely ready for that as well. Unfortunately Dave, Mitch and I all came down with holiday cold/flu bugs. Lucky for me though, I could stay in bed for 4 days. All better now.

Christmas Eve

We celebrated Christmas Evening at our house for the first time. I set out treats that included some gourmet cheeses, veggie spinach dip in a sourdough bowl, chocolate drizzled macaroons, decorated sugar cookies, crab dip, and cordials including Limoncello and a lovely cherry port. We all worked on the traditional gingerbread house…this year it turned out to be a replica of the Great Kiva where Mitch and I got married. It was not without its troubles. Debbie and Mitch thought pressing the gingerbread dough into an angel food pan would give it the perfect shape…unfortunately the dough melted down into the pan. They attempted to re-bake the dough and then eventually glued it with icing to the pan for support. It had an authentic ruins effect. Then Susanne, Debbie and Mitch decorated it with all kinds of sweets. For dinner I prepared a beef roast and all kinds of fixings. Everyone’s favourite side turned out to be the caramelized balsamic sweet potatoes. For dessert I served a homemade New York style cheesecake with cherry, blueberry, and strawberry toppings. I am still very much in love with my Kitchenaid artisan mixer from last

Christmas.
Christmas Day

Christmas day was spent at Debbie and Dave’s. A bright sunny but cold day. The snow let up long enough for us to safely travel. We ate a lovely breakfast and then opened gifts. Susanne got a new digital camera. I figured it was time to teach her some new cost effective technology. There were lots of little gifts, music, books, treats, bath goodies, and a few surprises. Mitch gave me a new iPod in the apple green I love. I nicknamed it “peapod.” Finally from Mom (Debbie) and Dave…we got an 8’ kayak. I joked with Dave that I am going to keep my mouth shut from here on out. Every time I mention something, Santa seems to remember. It is a sweet little lightweight vessel. I am really looking forward to the spring now. Mitch rides his stand up jet ski non-stop. Now I can go paddling around Gull Lake. Fun! Christmas dinner was fabulous. Mom (Debbie) prepared duck with a glaze of cherry preserves & brandy. Yummy goodness! A lovely time was had by all.

New Year's Eve

So as I said above I then spent 4 days in bed…lots of sleep to be had. Not such a bad thing with slippery snowy weather. Mitch and I shared a New Year’s Evening spent inside. He wanted beef nachos and I got lobster and mussels on sale from the market. Yummy yummy goodness. I also made some rich chocolate mousse for dessert. We settled in and proceeded to watch the horror movie “30 Days of Night.” Oh Boy! Scary indeed.

A few days later I did some obligatory, final, discounted post-Christmas shopping, wrapped up all the tree ornaments & decorations, and packed Christmas away for another year…well 10 ½ months.

While slightly sad to see the holiday lights all get dimmed. Winter here is far too dark...I am happy for the fresh start and to look forward. Mitch and I are questing for our super late honeymoon...we are thinking cruise of the Southern Caribbean off season (May-ish of this year). Come on...big tax refund!

Love & Peace
