The Looking Back Entries - The Garden 08

The slide show kind of says it all. I started with these tiny seedlings…and everyday I watched over my teeny babies and oohed and aahed over every new leaf and little bit of growth…and now in October, I still have tomatoes dropping off my past season bushes. Yes, worm poop, humus, fertilizers, and “Preen” (I barely had to weed because of this stuff, and it comes in an organic formula too!) all work wonders…especially for the truly “green” green thumb. It ended up being “no brainer” work. Pluck off the bugs, use a little soap spray, pick off dead leaves, pick anything “off ” looking, and water with care. Let nature do the rest. My first garden was truly a success.

In a couple weeks, I will have clean-up and prep the beds for their winter rest. However, I already have big plans for next year’s planting, including extending the first bed and adding a second 6' x 15' bed. I also learned what we do and do not like. Loved the broccoli and the pole beans not so much...I will try green beans next time. Loved all the tomatoes, but the watermelons did not fair well. I really want to try cucumbers next go around. All the spices did well. I may try my hand at garlic...I also need to start my growing season a bit earlier and stagger plantings so I have fruit ripening across the season. It is so exciting to look forward. To know we are doing a small part to "go green!" by composting and growing and producing some of our food.

Finally, I was actually a little sad because my potted bleeding heart did not really grow or flower this year. But surprise surprise, right now in mid-October it is in full bloom with flowers larger and pinker than before. It’s a happy thing!

Love & Peace
